Goodmans 100c 12″ Triaxiom circa 1960 Live Demo

July 31st, 2010

A live bench demonstration of the Goodmans Triaxiom 3-element driver with self contained crossover. Introduced around 1960 as a more advanced, 20 watt hifi speaker for tube amplifiers. Concurrently produced in the 1960s alongside the famous Axiom 80 (an alnico full range). These units are 16 ohms with fine edge-wound ALUMINUM voice coil and a great whizzer cone! It’s becoming common knowledge overseas - that this series of Goodmans is far superior to most 12″ coax/duax/triax drivers of the 50s and 60s by Altec, Jensen and Electrovoice. They have that signature musicality; that is so exclusively vintage british in tone. The high efficiency, 16 ohm rating is suited for many low to medium power tube amps. The incredible detail allows it to compete with Tannoy Reds and Golds in midrange detail. Some will enjoy the LF better. This is all dependent upon your choice of enclosure of course. Tannoy HPD385 - DIY project

July 22nd, 2010

This is actually a test recording of our Tannoy HPD 385 speakers, made to test the Zoom Q3 Handy Video Recorder on loan from a friend and some new AV editing software. The quality of the original Q3 recording was noticeably better before I converted/compressed the original MOV files to AVI format (because I wanted to combine and edit the original files into a movie so I could upload it here in a reasonable amount of time;)). Anyway, these are our Tannoy HPD speakers (15”) in a DIY Berkeley box. The original drivers were in a poor shape so we needed to refoam them as well as design and build a new crossover from scratch. This is the result. The speakers are currently hooked up to our Dufresne 300B tube amplifier, Rosellini 6SN7GT (Ken-Rad) tube preamplifier and Tascam CD701 player. The music is from CD “Bassics: The Best of the Ray Brown Trio 1977-2000″, Concord Jazz (Disc 1, Track 8 “Summertime” — chosen for its dynamic range; don’t miss the last 60 secs.). Mind you, I normally do not listen to the stereo system with my head virtually shoved into one of the drivers. :) In reality, the sound is at its glorious best a few meters in the front center of BOTH speakers (depending how loud the volume is). Also, the system’s bass output in the recording is somewhat weaker due to the inherent limitations of the Q3 Video Recorder. That being said, the recording is still close enough for you to get the idea.

DIY Ken-Rad 1633 preamplifier & JJ 300B amplifier

July 1st, 2010

My 1st DIY build ever - a preamplifier based on Ken-Rad 1633 tubes, fired up for the very first time. The preamp is hooked up to our gorgeous 300B amplifier and Tannoy HPD385 speakers (both DIY). The auditioning material in the clip is Keith Jarrett’s “Köln Concert”. All went exceedingly well, no fire extinguishers were needed. Not bad for a girl, even if I say so myself. :) (recorded with iPhone, indoor, night time)
